Ever read a letter that flows like poetry? This letter, A Better Half: An Epistle, is a cumulative reminiscence which the author paints from his memories of “U”. Avirup has painted his memories through the brush strokes of prose-poetry in this long narrative letter to someone whom the reader does not know, or shall never know. Neither is it a memoir of a person, nor is it a mere lament of a lover, but rather a recollection of the last notes of love that still linger in the writer’s psyche. From the first blooming of that flower in the poet’s heart, to the reverence that stayed “Forever”, cultured and nourished by the boy, who turned man in love, is a journey worth reading. After the bloomed flower became mature, its beauty started fading, and it fell to the ground, where it restarted its identity as an offering, showing reverence to the beloved’s footprints. The epistle should have been addressed to a specific person, but Avirup chooses not to do so. For love is both personal and for all, and should be cherished by all.
